Micromax is now number one smartphone seller in India

Micromax has become the number one smartphone seller in India for the first time. Micromax has finally reached the number one position in the Indian smartphone arena and its closest rival Samsung is now at 2nd spot. The company has been the second largest in terms of smartphone sales in the country for quite a while, but this is the first time it has actually gone ahead of Samsung in the sales department.

Canalys analyst Rushabh Doshi said that price-sensitivity of the market and the local customisations have helped Micromax. In a report issued on February 3, Canalys said Micromax accounted for 22% of smartphone sales in India in the October-December quarter, ahead of Samsung's 20%. In total, 21.6 million smartphones were sold in India in the period, a 90% surge from a year earlier.
The report goes on to state that about 25 percent of the devices sold had a price tag of under $100 (approximately Rs 6,000-6,200) and 41 percent of the smartphones sold were in the $100-$200 (approximately Rs 6,000-12,500) price range. India is the second largest market for mobile phones after China and is the third largest when it comes to the sales. A majority of these sales are driven by low cost smartphones and that is exactly what Micromax specializes in.
